tbt: Cenote Il Kil(ling it)

Cenote Il Kil, Mexico. December 2015.

During my Christmas holiday to Mexico I visited the stunning Cenote Il Kil in the Yucatan Peninsula, just a few miles from Chichen Itza. The sinkhole opens up to reveal a natural pool 26 metres below ground level. I’ve never seen anything quite like this in my life and it was a welcome break from the blaring sun to have a quick dip in the pool, which is around 40 metres deep. Roots from the plants at ground level hang down into the sinkhole which creates an eerily beautiful scene. My absolute highlight of the holiday.

Although I enjoyed a relaxing swim amongst the black catfish which live in the pool, this site has also featured in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series on a number of occasions. Not sure I’d be so keen to participate in that one…
